When I started to write for this album, I knew I wanted every song to be a gut reaction. I remember when I was writing the last album, I would make sure to add a bridge, a guitar solo, an outro, etc.

With this record, it was all about subtraction. I removed as much as I could to make sure there wasn't an ounce of fat on these songs. "Small Talk" is probably the best example of this process

Aaron Cuoto really brought everything to a new level with his sick saxophone solo. He recorded that in about two takes without ever hearing the vocal tracks. Crazy! I love the energy and "off the cuff" feel it gives the song.

Lyrically, this song is meant to over exaggerate the mild annoyance of forced small talk.
